Two separate titanium utensils, a spatula, and a long spork combine to make a set of backcountry tongs.

The Splitter titanium multi tongs are a compact, minimalist, and lightweight multi utensil for outdoor activities such as camping, barbecuing, and backpacking. The Splitter is made of two separate titanium utensils, a spatula and a long spork, that become tongs when joined together. The joining mechanism is a small stainless-steel pin that is fixed to the handle-end of the spatula. When this pin is inserted into the keyhole slot found at the end of the spork handle, the two become the gripping mechanism of the tongs. Once formed, the tongs need only the natural flexibility of the titanium to operate with perfect grip force.

Both the spatula and spork make perfectly useful outdoor cooking utensils on their own as well. The spatula features a chamfered edge for easy scooping, as well as a serrated corner for cutting into and checking on food while it is still cooking. The long spork is perfect for getting into deep food packets and can be used as both an eating and serving utensil.

In this case, the sustainable material we use to make our tongs is titanium. Titanium is one of the most beneficial metals to recycle because it can be reused again and again with virtually no loss of quality. In fact, it is both cheaper and less environmentally dangerous to recycle titanium components into new materials than it is to mine fresh titanium from the earth. The Splitter also uses 100% recycled cards for its packaging, which is of course eligible to be recycled again. This means no part of this product should ever need to end up as landfill. This is very important to all of us at Full Windsor!

Our Verdict

I’m a big fan of cooking “real” food when out for a night away, especially if I’m just out to enjoy camping and not in the middle of a week-long trail, in fact, the last time I was out, I was cooking: steak, mushrooms and onions for a sandwich, and I commented how I’d really like a set of backcountry tongs, as I find them to be the most versatile bit off cookware. So I was pleased to see The Splitter come in to store. After a bit of use with them, I can definitely say I like them, but I don’t think I’ll be taking them camping with me, however, I think they are a fantastic base camp item, just not something I’d take up onto the hills.

They are quite long so take up a little more room than I’d like in my pack, it’s good that they separate, and the spork on its own is fantastic at getting to the bottom of dehydrated meal packets, so that’s something worth considering. As for them as a set of tongs, they work really well and for something like a BBQ on the beach or at a campsite, they are fantastic, however, I don’t think I’d use them when I was wild camping. Even if I was cooking something fancy, as I said previously, I think they are a little cumbersome, but my main concern is that they are made from titanium and would scratch my non-stick cookware. So I think these will definitely be a good purchase for someone, I, however, will continue my quest to find a set of tongs to take hiking.
