The Silver Shadow is a great trekking umbrella that provides protection from the sun and rain when you’re out and about. A low weight and easy to use design make this a great alternative to waterproofs.

Walking across deserts in the blazing sun or through summer rain showers shouldn’t be a misery. The Silver Shadow Series provides a large reflective surface on top to deflect sunlight and a black underside to absorb wandering rays, allowing you to walk cooler and better protected. Its coating sheds water easily, eliminating the need to wear sweaty rain gear.

The base Silver Shadow most resembles our original design. Its rigid, fiberglass shaft insures that it won’t unexpectedly collapse, and its simple construction ensures years of trouble free use.The simple design with minimal parts keeps it light and durable. There’s simply fewer things to break or malfunction.

Our Verdict

Six Moon Design’s Silver Shadow Umbrella provides a good amount of coverage from the sun and rain. Although a lot of the design features such as the reflective silver top and black underside are more aimed at sun protection (along with the UPF 50+ rating) this umbrella stands up well to rain too. It’s size means that it is susceptible to gusts of wind, on calmer days it is a great piece of kit.

The simple foam handle is comfortable to grip while the umbrella opens and closes with ease. This standard fibre glass frame version reduces the cost, compared to the carbon frame but this does come with a slight weight penalty of just over 50g. For anyone who is more concerned with costs over grams this is obviously the one to choose.
