The Petzl Gully is an ultra-light ice axe for technical mountaineering and steep skiing. This version features a minimalist adze to keep the weight down but is sufficient for cleaning holds.

Our Verdict

This version of the Petzl Gully Ice Axe is made with the adze instead of the hammer. It’s minimalist to keep the weight down but sufficient for clearing holds. This flat, shovel-like feature also provides a great grip platform during self arrest.

The banana shaped pick tapers to 3mm for excellent hooking and unhooking as well as efficient penetration in hard ice. The Gully also features an easily adjustable trigrest which can be easily moved without the use of tools.

The pick and shaft are both type 1 (B rated) and with a shaft length of 45cm it’s compact and easy to carry when not in use. The bevelled spike also allows it to fit in to the majority of ski/climbing packs without doing any damage to the pack.
